Locally Sourced Produce

Castlegate Meat served at The Barrel Inn

A farm in tune with the Peak Districts countryside

Here at The Barrel Inn we look to serve local produce, wherever possible, and in support of this we look to nearby Castlegate Stud Farm, who rear their animals above Stoney Middleton, to supply much of our meat.

sparrowhawk.jpgCastlegate Stud Farm is run by the Hancock family who have farmed there for over 40 years, A s an upland hill farm it supports around 90 beef suckler cows and 370 sheep on its 181ha area, including parts of Longstone Moor and Stoney Middleton Dale and Top.

Their farm works with the Peak District National Park to Manage and conserve its land to a high standard and has been awarded the Environmental Quality Mark for its home-produced meat. It has also secured funding from the Vision Project to support and restore natural habitats on the farm and even has plans to support recreation projects.

Castlegate’s Peak District Countryside.

The surrounding countryside of the farm supports an array of wildlife and natural flora on its unimproved upland pasture. Typically, this land receives no fertiliser and provides excellent growing conditions for wild flowers such as the ox-eye daisy, meadow saxifrage and pignut.

The lime rich and acid grassland of the Limestone dales provide support for flowers such as earl-purple orchids, wild thyme and tormentil.birdsfoot_trefoil.jpg

Lead rakes, found locally point to the Peak Districts mining heritage and old spoil tips support and array of unusual wild flowers including birdsfoot trefoil, salad burnet and even mountain pansies.

In supporting the restoration of natural habitats, whilst farming the Hancock’s supply meat of the best order and The Barrel Inn are pleased to have Castlegate Farm as a meat supplier.
